Abstract

The chapter focuses on the document review process in an e-discovery project and its management. It discusses the cost of document review, creating a streamlined document review workflow, key points in selecting a review platform, understanding user roles and responsibilities, technical issues regarding document review, and advancements in the review process. Every aspect of the e-discovery process affects the document review phase of a document review project. Therefore, it is critical to understand what the market has to offer and to carefully select tools or platforms that meet the requirements of a project. Also, sometimes one review platform fits the mold for every case. One matter might require a tool that provides very strong concept folder capabilities, whereas another matter could call for an application with well-defined workflow methodologies. Document review process offers significant opportunity for streamlining efficiency of e-discovery process, as document review is the largest single cost involved in the process. And it therefore must be controlled as effectively and efficiently as possible. By consciously selecting and deploying a productive review platform, companies can reduce staff workload during the review process, create a more thorough case strategy, and generally gain more control over the entire e-discovery process.
