Abstract

Researchers and technologists always look for inspiration for new developments and discoveries. On the other hand, nature never fails to prove itself—it offers the ultimate solution to every problem, from simpler to complex. An interesting example of natural inspiration is the bioinspired coating. Replicating the structure and functioning of natural beings with a novel development or enhancement is termed bioinspired or biomimicry and the study of the same is called biomimetics. The intriguing properties of these innovative bioinspired coatings, such as stimuli-responsive, antimicrobial, antifouling, self-healing, and superwettability, have lured many researchers irrespective of their fields. The present chapter explores ongoing research in innovative biomimetics coatings—their biological model, design, fabrication, and applications.
