Abstract

This chapter gives an overview of acrylic and methacrylic ester polymers. It generally focuses on non-dental applications of acrylic resins. A large variety of monomers is known and discussed here, because of the possibility of esterifying the acrylic acid and methacrylic acid with various alcohols. The chapter includes the specialties, synthesis, and manufacture of the acrylic resins. Special additives like ultraviolet absorbers and flame retardants are used to enhance the function of acrylic resins and are described in brief. Curing has been developed to monitor the photopolymerization of resins. Acrylic resins are appreciated for their exceptional clarity, self-extinguishing, transparency, and superior design adaptability. Special formulations are also described in detail.
