Abstract

This chapter presents a serial study of two projective techniques—the children's apperception test and the family relations test. The boy when he was 5 years 2 months old is examined. He was the second illegitimate child of a mother still in her late teens. She lived with her parents and worked as a daily help. As she and her own mother were completely incapable of caring for Bobby they had approached the Catholic Rescue Society to ask them to arrange for his adoption. However, as nothing materialized immediately from this source, his mother asked for him to be taken into Care. It was the practice of the Local Authority in whose care he was placed to put infants in a nursery where they stayed up to 2 years. During this time, Bobby spent two long periods in hospital. At the age of 2, he was moved to a Toddler's Home. He stayed there for about 10 months. At 2 years 11 months, he was boarded out with a view to adoption. He stayed there for 1 ¼ years and it was not a success. He was a slow and faddy feeder and frequently vomited.
