Abstract

This chapter reviews the current state of case definitions, epidemiology and prognosis for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The evidence for understanding the pathophysiology of CFS, including viral, neuroendocrine, central nervous system and psychosocial explanations are reviewed. Research into the pathophysiology of CFS remains inconclusive but it is best understood as a biopsychosocial illness. Effective treatment strategies are outlined, emphasizing the importance of mind-body interactions.
