Abstract
This chapter explores translator's Ubersetzungsweise in a lengthy unit, Isaiah 28. Although there is not space to address each and every feature of chapter 28 of Isaiah, this reading demonstrates how translator went about forming it into a literary unit. On first glance, chapter 28 might seem a loose collection of ad hoc renderings. However, a closer reading provides prima facie evidence that translator produced a coherent unit. The author proposes to uncover translator's synthetic understanding of chapter 28 by exploring how he achieved his rendering. Before doing so, however, it is important to comprehend literary structure of this passage in LXX without reference to its Vorlage. The chapter opens with a woe pronounced against the crown of insolence, defined as a metaphor for the hirelings of Ephraim, further described as the blossom which has fallen from its splendor.Keywords: Isaiah 28; literary structure; LXX's Vorlage
