Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of tactical decisions that are made at different stages of biofuel supply chains, and discusses uncertainties in biomass supply chains that impact on tactical decisions, such as variations in biomass yield, biofuel demand and price, and biomass-to-biofuel conversion rates. Two important tactical decisions are presented in this chapter, including (1) the master planning of biofuel supply chains and (2) the synthesis of conversion processes in biorefineries. For the master planning problem, a robust fuzzy mathematical programming model is developed to determine optimal tactical decisions in the Jatropha-to-biodiesel supply chain. For the processing synthesis, a robust scenario-based stochastic programming model is proposed for the superstructure optimization of a microalgae-based biorefinery, finding the optimal processing routes for biodiesel production from microalgal biomass.
