Abstract

Movements and home ranges of reptiles and amphibians vary considerably, both among and within species. Home ranges (the area in which individuals carry out daily activities) and territories (defended portion of home range) vary considerably among species and are influenced by resource distribution ands risks associated with gaining access to resources. This variation is summarized with examples. Reasons for dispersal and mass movements, when they occur, are also summarized. Mechanisms that allow individuals to find their way back (homing) or find new places to live (dispersal) are summarized and vary from use of landmarks to use of the Earth’s magnetic forces.
