Abstract
Compression stockings or bandages are used in compression therapy, which is a very important health-care and medical treatment for patients suffering from venous and lymphatic disorders including venous ulcers, lymphedema, varicose veins, and deep vein thrombosis However, these compression devices could not provide the freedom to adjust the pressure level externally whenever needed. This chapter primarily focuses on the research and development on the shape memory stocking for functional compression management for chronic venous disorders. Memory stocking possess unique shape and stress memory capabilities through which a controlled static and dynamic compression benefits can be achieved directly on the limb using external stimulus, i.e., heat. The chapter also aims to cover the basic fundamentals of memory polymers, related materials, production methods, shape memory mechanisms, and mechanics. This could help readers realize their vast potentials and inspire them to discover other medical application areas for the further growth in shape memory polymers field.
