Abstract

This chapter discusses the importance of safety in chemical plant operation. The chemical industry has traditionally devoted considerable attention to safety. Most accidents arise through lack of training or lack of concentration. The proper way to do a job is the safest way and this requires thinking before acting. There are a few basic safety rules that should be observed when working in all chemical manufacturing areas, such as no smoking or eating, no drinking of alcoholic liquor, and no drinking except from water fountains. Safety instructions and danger signs should be observed. One should wear all personal protective equipment provided and replace damaged items immediately. One should not enter processing areas other than one's own place of work. One should not tamper with faulty equipment or electrical fittings, and one should report such faults to the supervisor. One should get immediate medical attention for injuries however minor they appear to be. Most dangers can be avoided if readily recognized and the right corrective action taken promptly. Dressing up in full protective clothing is often considered time-wasting. In fact it takes less than 3 minutes to dress in a plastic suit, protective boots, safety hat, face visor, and gloves that provide complete head- to- toe protection for many operations that might otherwise be hazardous.
