Abstract

Dementia is a syndrome associated with progressive impairments in memory and learning ability, cognitive skills, behavior, activities of daily living, and quality of life. The molecular mechanisms contributing to the pathogenesis of dementia are not fully understood. Some positive results have been obtained in animal models and human patients using traditional Chinese medicinal plants. These plants include Huperzia serrata, Ginkgo biloba, ginseng, Anemarrhena rhizome, green tea, Danshen, and Radix puerariae. Formulations prepared from these plants produce neuroprotective effects in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease.
