Abstract

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a disease with poor prognosis and no cure. Worldwide, the incidence of this cancer problem continues to rise. The biology and tumorigenesis of this complex mesenchymal-type tumor remains incompletely understood. Over the past decade, emerging evidence has demonstrated that microRNAs, small nonprotein coding single-strand RNA negatively regulating gene expression, are deranged and exert significant biologic effects in multiple malignancies. This review will provide an update of the current state of microRNA translational research aimed at unraveling the novel biomarkers pertinent in several clinical problems of mesothelioma.
