Abstract

Chapter 8 presents the numerical method of bi-characteristics. The tetrahedral and pentahedral characteristic networks are constructed and applied to riverine and estuarine environments. Inflow and outflow boundary conditions are formulated in terms of the characteristic surfaces. The stability of the various schemes is analyzed, and limits on the time-step size are determined. Leendertse's and MacCormac's finite-difference models are constructed for shallow-water flow in two space dimensions. The deforming grid, Petrov-Galerkin method is used to simulate flood propagation on an initially dry terrain. The MUSCL finite-volume method combined with Hancock's scheme is developed, and the discretization of the source term in problems of complicated bathymetry is analyzed.
