Abstract

Exposure and response prevention (ERP) as a component of cognitive-behavioral therapy has a robust evidence base and is widely identified as the first-line treatment for children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This chapter provides a brief overview of the theory and proposed mechanisms underlying ERP and the evidence supporting its use in young people. This chapter then provides a guide for therapists on how to implement ERP as a module of treatment for young people with OCD. This includes an overview of psychoeducation on ERP; strategies to increase buy-in, collaboration, and adherence; implementation of ERP within session; and how to support ERP homework. This content is illustrated with a clinical case example and summarized with key practice points.
