Abstract

Sea cucumbers are extraordinary animals. They improve sediment characteristics and its associated fauna. Also, sea cucumbers have a significant profile of nutritional and medicinal values. Sea cucumber stocks have a long history of exploitation, which caused a decline in their natural stocks worldwide. Consequently, there is a prompted interest for sea cucumber aquaculture and restocking programmes. However, sea cucumber aquaculture in the Middle East has not received much attention. The growth of the sea cucumber industry in the Middle East is of potential value. To succeed in the aquaculture and stock enhancement, technical and financial support is needed. Also, stock assessment and biological and ecological knowledge are necessary to enable the production of specific regulations, aiming to produce a sustainable fishery.
