Abstract

This chapter discusses the role of national libraries in national and international information systems in Asia. In an earlier survey, responses to the questionnaires on the role of national libraries in national and international information systems were received from East Asia (China and Japan), South Asia (Bangladesh and Sri Lanka), and from South-East Asia (Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand). The chapter highlights a survey of the Chinese library system. The China Society of Library Science, led by the Chinese Communist Party, is a learned organization with mass participation. The Society itself has joined the China Association for Science and Technology as a collective member. The new China Society of Library Science may play an important part at the professional level in developing the Chinese library and information system.
