Abstract

This chapter gives the application and prospect of TPMS structures. It proposes new and advanced lattice support structures for SLM/DMLS processes. Two types of lattice structures are investigated for their suitability as support structures in reducing material and build-time while fulfilling the structural demands required by a metallic support structure. The experimental results reveal that a potential material saving can be achieved when a lattice support structure with lower volume fractions is used. Additionally, a novel graded lattice support structure is developed for metal additive manufacturing, and the use of gradually graded lattice support structures improves the manufacturability of both the lattice structure and the supporting part, which is suitable for internal lightweight and external support structure applications of metal additive manufacturing. Finally, the potential applications of TMPS structures extended to nano-scale or meter-scale are introduced.
