Abstract

Analytical quality control (AQC) is a part of the total quality assurance program of the laboratory and should be introduced and evaluated in an integrated manner. This chapter describes a practical approach for distributing responsibilities for AQC over different staff-lines in the laboratory and to defining a time frame for the execution of different aspects of AQC. The principle used is that the checks are differentiated into three lines of responsibility. The first line is the responsibility of the analyst who actually performs the analyses, and is carried out at a high frequency while the second line is the responsibility of a person independent of the analyst, and is carried out less frequently. The third line is the responsibility of laboratory management, and is aimed particularly at ensuring interlaboratory standardization. The chapter describes some general aspects of AQC at these three lines and gives practical examples of tools that can be used in microbiological laboratories.
