Abstract

This chapter focuses on equilibrium phase diagrams of aluminum-copper-lithium (Al-Cu-Li), aluminum-lithium-magnesium (Al-Li-Mg), aluminum-lithium-manganese (Al-Li-Mn), aluminum-lithium-silicon (Al-Li-Si), aluminum-lithium-zirconium (Al-Li-Zr), and aluminum-copper-lithium-magnesium (Al-Cu-Li-Mg). Two binary and three ternary phases are in equilibrium with the aluminum solid solution in the aluminum corner of the Al-Cu-Li system. The structure parameters, composition, and density of these phases are listed. The solidification reactions in Al-rich alloys are shown and invariant reactions are also listed. Some of the Al-Cu-Li alloys contain small amounts of magnesium. The chapter discusses the implications of this addition on the phase composition and solidification. The Al-Li-Mg phase diagram analyzes commercial Al-Li alloys containing magnesium, such as Russian Grade 1420. The isothermal sections of Al-Li-Mg system at two temperatures are demonstrated. Limit solubilities of Mg and Li in solid aluminum at different temperatures are provided. The Al-Li-Mn phase diagram is studied in the range of Al-rich alloys. The Al-Li-Si system is considered as a base for rapidly solidified alloys and composite materials with Al-Li matrix and silicon carbide (SiC) reinforcement. The chapter describes the application of phase diagrams to commercial Al-Li alloys including effects of some additions, and the phase composition and structure of Al-Li alloys after precipitation hardening.
