Abstract
ADO.NET is the latest implementation of Microsoft's Universal Data Access strategy. ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) has gone under many changes, bug fixes, and enhancements. These libraries are the foundation for many Web sites and applications that are in place today. Microsoft is positioning ADO.NET to be the primary data access technology for the .NET Framework. This ensures that the Data Access Architecture is mature and robust because all the Common Language 1Kuntime (CL1K) languages will be using ADO.NET for their primary means of communicating with data providers. ADO.NET is based on XML, so one has rich support for XML documents. The ADO.NET objects are consistent with the XML specification and are well-defined. It is possible to take a plain XML document with just a root node and open it in ADO.NET, add data to it, and save it back out. Also, ADO.NET serializes data using XML that allows ADO.NET to take advantage of a standards-based approach to move data back and forth in the applications. With rich support for any data source that creates or consumes XML, ADO.NET is truly the data access technology for current and future applications. With ADO.NET it is possible to connect to myriad data sources with the speed and flexibility that is required in business.
