Abstract

Video surveillance systems, also known as closed-circuit television systems (CCTV), are part of a facility's larger security and life safety plan. The larger plan may include physical and operational aspects of security as well as other security or life safety systems such as access control and intrusion detection. Video surveillance systems basically perform five functions: a video capture through a surveillance camera; video transmission to a security control center; video processing; recording of the video; and viewing of the video on a monitor. Digital video surveillance systems using standard structured cable and IP and Ethernet protocols allow the system to easily become part of a smart building. It is critical to note that the deployment of video surveillance systems must take into consideration important legal aspects, mainly a person's right to privacy and the presumption of security.
