Abstract

This chapter lists and describes each of the different modes of transportation involved in the US transportation network, including freight rail; highways, roadways, and motor carrier networks; ports and intermodal transport; mass transit; air freight; commercial and general aviation; postal and shipping services; and pipelines. Protection of the transportation network and the National Infrastructure Protection Plan are covered. These discussions are followed by an overview of transportation safety and security functions managed by the Department of Homeland Security and the divisions that perform these functions (most notably that of the Transportation Security Administration). Finally, programs specific to each transportation mode are described in detail.
