Abstract

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause severe and harmful human pathologies, such as neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, stroke, and many other ailments. To counter the harmful impact of ROS, antioxidants play an important in providing human health benefits. An antioxidant generated from diatoms provides immense health benefits. Very little is known about the antioxidant activity of diatoms. This chapter elaborates the role of diatoms as highly efficacious antioxidative agents and their role in the environment. Furthermore, the chapter distinguishes between enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants and discusses their applications and future perspectives.
