Abstract

Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders represent a unique subspecialty within neurology, in which care delivered remotely, without in-person visits, may offer a particularly well-suited alternative to traditional care, thanks to the importance of visually observed phenomenology and increasing reliance on objective measurements in clinical assessments. While regulatory, financial, and technological barriers have impeded wider adoption of telehealth in Parkinson’s and movement disorder care, rapid and dramatic changes were seen in 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This chapter aims to discuss and explain why Parkinson’s and movement disorders, as a subspecialty of neurology, embody a unique area with regards to telehealth and how the recent pandemic-related changes created unprecedented opportunities and acceleration in the wide adoption of teleneurology in this subspecialty. The chapter also offers practical advice and techniques relevant to Parkinson’s and movement disorders, and outlines our current telehealth challenges and priorities in the area of Parkinson’s and movement disorders.
