Abstract

Corrosion of metallic substrate is a global menace that leads to huge economic drainage and environmental hazards. Graphene-based composites have been developed as one of the most interesting anticorrosive materials and are known for their unique physical, chemical, optical, and mechanical properties. The application of graphene-based anticorrosive materials has been extremely used for the protection of metallic substrates. The most important synthetic procedures of graphene and its derivatives, and their applications for the protection of metallic substrates from corrosive damages have been discussed in this chapter. The graphene possesses effective barrier properties that inhibit the penetration of corrosive ingredients (water, oxygen, chloride ion, etc.) toward the metal surfaces; it also acts as a physical trap for water diffusing into the coating. Furthermore, in this chapter, the anticorrosive application of graphene and graphene-based composites for the protection of steel surfaces against saline medium has been highlighted.
