Abstract
This chapter reviews smart actuator activities for biomedical applications. The microsystems applications in the biomedical field involve advanced technology for the purposes of ensuring high accuracy. In order to perform operations at a micro level, the material that is injected into the body should be extremely light weight, for example, shape memory alloys and polymers. Detailed information is given in this review about the materials used for the smart actuators. Drug delivery using a controlled pump, direction control using microvalves, and precise cutting using the smart actuators are briefly discussed. The combination of smart sensors and smart actuators, which are connected to the digital output, will give a clear view of the process going on inside the body. DNA interaction, detection of polymerase chain reaction products, dissociation of biomolecules, cardiovascular activity, neural activity, muscle activity, and kinematics are carried out using a combination of the smart actuators and smart sensors. This is the area of interest for technologies in the field of biomedical sciences.
