Abstract

This chapter looks at whether shale gas has a place in modern energy. Big energy – the energy that powers much of the modern world – comes from fossil fuel. It makes our cars and planes go and it generates most of our electricity. But burning it produces CO2 that warms the planet. Advocates of shale gas think that burning it in power stations is much better than burning coal. They know it’s not as low in emissions as using renewables to generate electricity – or for that matter nuclear – but they think it will be difficult to get to low emissions without some help, because we’re so energy hungry. Probably we’ll get even more electricity-hungry in the future because we’ll want electric cars.
