Abstract

Self-medication practice is common in developing countries with over-the-counter, prescribed, and herbal medications. Self-medication practice is a double-edged sword with advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, it could help patients and health care providers and on the other hand it could harm patients. This chapter aims to discuss the medication-safety related issues, such as history; prevalence; reasons; advantages and disadvantages; self-medication with antibiotics and herbal medications; and the role of pharmacists and other health care professionals toward self-medication. This chapter aims also to discuss the pharmacovigilance of self-medication and its importance, highlight the self-medication challenges in developing countries, and provide recommendations to overcome the challenges.
