Abstract

The regulation of commercial content in the United States emerged early in the twentieth century as a result of excesses spawned by laissez-faire capitalism. Muckraking journalists fueled the passage of regulations such as the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, which prohibited misrepresentation of cures and required that all ingredients be identified on the product label.
