Abstract
PLC discussions start with OLCS concept with its characteristics and hierarchical interlock and sequential control concept. Discussions on PLC operation have been elaborated with hardware details including variations in timer counter, encoder, etc., and interfaces so that variations in types of PLC and selection methods could be well understood. Detailed discussions have been presented to include program types such as Codesys, CoDAC, various programming languages as per IEC 61131-3. To complete the discussions, details on PLC OpenXML and PLC OPC UA have been covered. Starting from nano PLC to integrated system, there can be wide variations, so discussions have been presented on configurations and integration methods including field-level integration. Starting from integrations through various RS links large integration with the help of OPC interface over Ethernet network using various fieldbus systems have been explained. Detailed discussions have been presented on diagnostics, PLC vulnerability, and security management issues. PLC performance assessment for different applications such as factory automation, process application, etc., have been covered. Safe PLC is used in hazardous areas, discussions have been presented on safe PLC as per IEC 61508 including implementation of the same.
