Abstract

This chapter discusses the implementation of national energy policy for energy conservation in Sri Lanka as part of the national energy strategy. The national energy demand management and conservation program (NEDMCP), which also received assistance from foreign donors, consists of the Industrial Energy Conservation Program (IECP) dealing with industrial and commercial energy users, and conservation program in the transport, household, and agricultural sectors, and among energy supply institutions. The NEDMCP also includes the Transport Energy Conservation Program (TECP). The first phase of TECP consisted of a comprehensive study by a team of foreign and local consultants, which helped to identify areas for immediate action that can yield short-term benefits, and medium- and long-term program that may require significant investments and effort. Conservation activities aimed at household energy users were pursued also under the NEDMCP, mainly through public education and media campaigns. In conclusion, energy demand management and conservation is one area where Sri Lankans can do much for themselves with only a modest input from foreign sources.
