Abstract

The snow leopard is protected by law in all 12 range countries, though enforcement varies. We compiled information on illegal trade in snow leopards from 2003 to 2012 through a literature search, questionnaire surveys, and market surveys. The results showed that illegal trade is a serious threat to the species. A total of 57 records of a minimum of 334 snow leopards in trade were identified through the literature search, and 25 records of a minimum of 78 animals recorded through questionnaires and market surveys. In total, 412 snow leopards (82 records) were reported in trade during 2003–2012. Skins were the most frequent (66%) body part followed by bones, skull, or skeletons with skins. No records were found for bones traded on their own. Two records of live snow leopards being smuggled were reported. Seven records were found of trade outside the range, from Australia, Georgia, Myanmar, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
