Abstract

This chapter explains the hot embossing technique, which is developed to different levels, beginning with simple manually controlled hot embossing machines used in laboratories, up to high-level machines with a high-grade automation used in industry and science. The chapter discusses the technical aspects of hot embossing machines, with the focus on the press unit, the drive system, the control of force and velocity, and the control unit as an interface to the user. In order to understand the technical solutions that are used for hot embossing machines, first the technical requirements for replication of microstructures by hot embossing are discussed. Further, the challenges in the development of hot embossing machines are estimated. The development requirements can be implemented in different ways, each implementation with specific advantages and potential disadvantages. The focus is set on the implementation of mechanical stiffness, drive unit, and control system. Finally, the chapter discusses some of the commercially available and popular hot embossing machines.
