Abstract
Older age, physical inactivity, and mental illness each contribute to an increased risk of poor physical health. Older age is associated with an increased disease burden, and mental disorders among older adults can have serious life consequences. However, exercise has been identified as an effective method for promoting both mental and physical health in this population. Understanding the effects of exercise in older adults with mental disorders is of particular interest, given the world's population is rapidly aging. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the effects of exercise interventions on the two most common mental disorders (depression and dementia) in older people and provides implications for clinical practice and future research.
