Abstract

This chapter deals with dispersals into India, where a number of topics regarding the role of the Indian subcontinent in hominin evolution will be discussed. Starting with the earliest hominin migrants of the Early Pleistocene, an evaluation of the migration routes; the impact of geographical barriers; and available natural resources in the context of archeological, anthropological, and genetic data is provided. This chapter also reviews the archeological and genetic evidence that signals the appearance of anatomically modern humans in the subcontinent, including fossils, artifacts, and uniparental and biparental genetic markers.
