Abstract
Developments in ceramic-coated separators are summarized. The focus is on the structure of the separator and how the use of ceramic-coated separators affects overall battery performance. This is a key feature that needs to be analyzed in great detail. Different types of inorganic materials that can be used in the coating layer are discussed. In addition, the way in which different structures of inorganic particles can affect the performance of batteries is highlighted. It is concluded that the optimal inorganic material as well as its size and structure need to be better defined to completely use the benefits of the ceramic coating approach.
