Abstract

This chapter discusses the cataloguing of special materials. In addition to nonbook materials such as maps, plans, gramophone records, microfilms and illustrations, there are special classes of books such as serials, music, atlases, and incunabula. This chapter highlights some of the problems that are involved in the cataloguing of serials, music, deals with phonorecords, including discs and cylinders, wire and tape recordings, player-piano rolls, etc, cataloguing of films and filmstrips, problems presented by micro-material concern storage and use more than cataloguing, in an outstanding survey of the history of, and current practices in, map cataloguing, problems posed by incunabula, single and collection of manuscripts, trade catalogs, a file of news cuttings, cataloguing of scientific and technical reports and also major problem with local collections. These problems also have their case studies that provide the better understanding of each problem.
