Abstract

This chapter describes the asymptomatic method (ASYM) for multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) processes, which provide systematic solutions to the four identification problems in control: test design, parameter estimation, model order/structure selection, and model validation. These solutions lead to an automatic identification procedure that is very user friendly. The chapter outlines the steps of parameter estimation, order/structure selection, and model validation. ASYM is tested in the chapter using the glass tube process by white-noise-like pseudo–random binary sequence (PRBS) signals and lowpass PRBS signals, and its way of solving the problem is compared with those of standard textbook methods. In the MIMO ASYM method, test design and model validation play more important roles in industrial applications than parameter estimation and order selection do.
