Abstract

Advances in portable and wearable electronics have inspired great efforts to explore flexible, lightweight, and environmentally friendly energy storage systems. In this respect, flexible solid-state supercapacitors (FSCs) meet growing needs for portable electronic devices such as foldable phones and wearable electronics, and hold promise to provide highly specific and volumetric energy density and power density, and an exceptionally long life cycle. This chapter introduces FSCs with a detailed description about their different components, such as flexible substrates, gel electrolytes, and device configurations (symmetric and asymmetric). Moreover, we discuss current challenges and future perspectives in developing high-performance portable supercapacitors for many foldable and wearable smart applications.
