Abstract
A data warehouse is an integrated database whose data is collected from several data sources, and supports online analytical processing (OLAP). Typically, a query to the data warehouse tends to be complex and involves a large volume of data. To keep the data at the warehouse consistent with the source data, changes to the data sources should be propagated to the data warehouse periodically. The aim of a data warehouse is to enable users to make better and faster decisions. To achieve this, the data warehouse collects information from several data sources and integrates them into a single database that contains historical, summarized and consolidated data. A data cube is constructed from a subset of attributes in the database. Certain attributes are chosen to be measure attributes. Other attributes are selected as dimensions. The measure attributes are aggregated according to the dimensions. The data cube can be stored in the special data structures (that is, array) or in the tables of the relational system. An analytical processing with data stored in special data structures is called multidimensional OLAP (MOLAP). Relational OLAP (ROLAP) is an analytical processing with data stored in a relational system.
