Abstract

The Department of the Interior (DOI) is the principal federal department for managing natural resources other than agriculture, oceans and forests in the United States. Its mission statement, “The US Department of the Interior protects America’s natural resources and heritage, honors our cultures and tribal communities, and supplies the energy to power our future”, reflects an agency with a great deal of responsibility and a multiplicity of functions. This chapter reviews the history and major laws that affect the Department of the Interior and its member agencies, including the US Fish and Wildlife Service, US National Park Service, US Bureau of Land Management, US Geological Survey, and the other components of the DOI.
