Abstract

This chapter presents various plate theories, progressing from the Kirchhoff plate theory to the first-order shear deformation plate theory of Mindlin, and finally, to the third-order plate theory of Reddy. The latter two plate theories allow for the effect of transverse shear deformation that has been neglected in the Kirchhoff plate theory. Using the principle of virtual displacements, the governing equations and boundary conditions are derived for uniform thickness plates on the basis of the kinematic assumptions of the aforementioned plate theories.
