Abstract

This chapter explains the difference between covert and overt surveillance and identifies three important points about surveillance: surveillance by human eye is preferable, visual surveillance devices are invaluable in certain situations, and a surveillance log is important. The chapter also explores the types of stationary surveillance (fixed, short-term, and very temporary) and gives examples of each, hardware used in stationary surveillance, the types of moving surveillance (foot, public conveyance, and auto) with examples of each, hardware used in moving surveillance, the concurrent use of moving and stationary surveillance including the use of checkpointing, five factors to consider in pre-surveillance planning, important legal points to consider, and the use of tracking devices.
