Abstract

Speed is a conditional ability in addition to strength and endurance. However, it is strongly associated with explosive strength and coordination abilities, thus it is a complex ability. Factors that determine speed involve genetics, the nervous system, and the skeletal muscle system. Locomotion is a result of contraction, thus as a conditional ability it is closely associated with force. It is worth noting that speed is relative, and its value needs to be interpreted in regard to a particular sport category since speed training for marathon athletes differs from that for sprinters. Both marathon athletes and sprinters need speed training since the fastest wins. External factors may also influence performance since a tennis game is slower on a clay court and a rally takes longer; players also have higher heart rates and lactic acid levels compared to when playing hard court games.
