Abstract

Six savant skills found in autism also occur in typical individuals. These include extraordinary memory for numbers and facts, rapid mental mathematical calculation, mental calendar calculation, extraordinary autobiographical memory, accurate music replication after hearing a musical piece a single time, and drawing an image or scene with detailed fidelity after viewing it for a single time. Neither the population prevalence of savant skills in autism nor the prevalence of parallel extraordinary skills in typical individuals is known. Prevalence estimates for savant skill in autism have ranged from less than 1% to 33%. Evidence has suggested that intense practice, practice-induced brain changes, and atypical brain structure may each contribute to savant skills, as well as to superior perceptual discrimination and pattern recognition skills. The inter-relationship of intelligence, atypical sensory responsiveness, superior perceptual discrimination skills, and savant skills has not been determined.
