Abstract

This chapter highlights the new strategies in application of polyelectrolyte multilayers for delivery of drugs and bioactives with focus on the biocompatible and biodegradable components. Further, it incorporates extensive information on recent achievements in encapsulation of bioactives and drugs into multilayers, their structure as well as the driving forces and the mechanisms of stimuli responsive films and capsules. The case studies are discussed for (1) formation of multilayers for polynucleotides and proteins protection and delivery; (2) hydrogels as promising carriers for drug delivery, (3) decoration of surfaces of implants, and (4) target delivery of cells, genes, proteins, etc. using functional multilayered systems. PE multilayers have elaborative applications in regenerative medicine, anticancer therapy, bionic devices, and biosensing.
