Abstract

High cost is one of the biggest challenges of the widespread commercialization of fuel cell electric vehicles. Platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) catalysts are promising to reduce the cost, but the performance and durability of these catalysts are yet to reach commercialization. The initial performance of these catalysts is getting closer and closer to their Pt counterpart. However, these catalysts have huge durability issues. Researchers are currently putting enormous efforts into improving durability and developing mitigation strategies for PGM-free catalysts. This chapter summarizes state-of-the-art PGM-free catalyst development methods and the integration of these catalysts in fuel cells. Subsequently, an understanding of PGM-free catalysts’ stability challenges and mitigation strategies is highlighted.
