Abstract

This chapter examines the issues associated with the implementation of two prominent health-promoting behaviors, physical activity and exercise, as promising therapies in the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Definitions for physical activity, exercise, and related terms and discussion of physical activity and fitness levels in persons with CKD are provided. The literature on the association of physical activity and exercise and CKD-related outcomes, along with current recommendations for physical activity and guidelines for persons with chronic conditions such as CKD, is discussed. Unique psychosocial and interpersonal barriers to physical activity that may be faced in this population, along with emerging issues regarding physical activity and exercise interventions for persons with CKD, are considered. Considerations of contraindications and safety for physical activity in CKD patients are also presented. Finally, proposed directions for future research to facilitate health-promoting behaviors in this growing population are presented.
