Abstract

Chapter 6 of Volume 1A describes the process operation that requires the separation of entrained materials of two or more immiscible phases in a process. In particular, the separation of two and three phase fluids. The chapter further describes the design of cyclone separator, and determination of cyclone collection efficiency; troubleshooting cyclone maloperations and the review of electrical precipitators. The chapter reviews a case study of an explosion in the ExxonMobil Torrance, California refinery's electrostatic precipitator (ESP) control air pollution due to a lacked safety instrumentation, equipment failure, safe operating limits and improper safeguard as sufficient hazard analysis.
