Abstract
With the introduction of DNS into the Windows operating system, Microsoft started to tackle one of the customer-dependant needs that have made Microsoft such a market leader in today's network operating systems shuffle. Since then, the Microsoft domain name system (DNS) service has become the central brain for all communication within one's native active directory Windows environment. This chapter focuses on installing, configuring, and integrating the Windows Server 2003 DNS service in the current environment. Installing the DNS server service into Windows Server 2003 computer can be done in a number of different ways. For many, it is installed via the first installation of a domain controller during the construction of a Windows Server 2003 active directory domain implementation. Others find that a simple upgrade from their current Windows DNS suffices as the best installation method. Lastly, Windows Server 2003 DNS can be installed and used without active directory on a stand-alone Windows Server 2003 server. The chapter also sheds light on some basic monitoring and troubleshooting steps guided to help solve some of the more common DNS problems that most administrators face today.
